Who is eligible to participate in the challenge?

You are eligible to participate in the Social Tech Start-Up Challenge if;
You are at least 18 years of age;
- You are a natural born citizen or naturalized citizen of South Africa;
- You have not previously participated in any accelerator or incubator program;
- You are an individual or a small business/organisation

The following are requirements for small businesses/organizations:
- Your business/organization is less than 2 years old;
- Your business/organization has a maximum of 5 employees (including yourself);
- You have not received more than R100,000 in seed funding

What kind of ideas can I submit?

The scope includes new products, new services – or a combination of the two.

However, the product or service must be a digital solution. The Social Tech Start-Up Challenge is only seeking solutions related to social problems in South Africa. Digital solutions that do not address a social problem will not be considered for evaluation.

What will finalists receive?

Top 30
- 3 day kick-off entrepreneurship workshop where you will develop a prototype in collaboration with Urbian.

Top 15
- GIBBS entrepreneurship program
- Develop a prototype in collaboration with Urbian

Top 5
- Develop a MVP (Minimum Viable Product) in collaboration with Urbian
- The chance to secure a portion of the 5 million ZAR in funding on demo day.

Are travel expenses included?

All travel expenses will be covered for the Top 30 applicants

Who owns the ideas I submit?

Full ownership of the idea remains with the idea author.

What is expected from applicants?

We expect that all applicants are passionate and motivated by their idea. If selected for final rounds(s), we expect you to attend all courses and trainings to ensure the highest possible success rate.
